ACIS x2

At last year’s Australasian Conference on Information Systems (ACIS), we contributed two research papers.
? How is misinformation tackled on decentralised social media?
Our research dives into platforms like Mastodon, Hive, and Lemmy, showing how they rely on community-driven moderation and incentive systems (e.g., token rewards, reputation points) instead of traditional, centralised approaches. Through user interviews, we developed a model that explains how these unique strategies work to combat misinformation. Decentralisation brings new challenges—but also exciting solutions!
? How can we stop the spread of harmful rumours on social media?
The paper "Analysing the Reach of Debunking Posts on Twitter"  dives into the challenges of combating misinformation, using the case of Ivermectin during COVID-19. Findings reveal a key issue: debunking messages rarely reach those spreading rumours, limiting their impact. At the same time, authors of debunking posts avoid directly engaging with rumours to prevent amplifying them.
