ORCID

ORCID stands for "Open Researcher & Contributor iD". With this iD, researchers are uniquely linked to their research output and activities, even if they have the same name or different spellings. As part of an ORCID web address, it refers to a person's ORCID profile, in which further data can be stored permanently and independently of the institution.

ORCID is used internationally by publishers and scholarly organisations and is already integrated into many journals and large systems such as Web of Science, CrossRef and BASE.  ORCID is jointly supported by an independent non-profit organisation and has become a quasi-standard for the identification of scientific authors, with over 10 million iDs issued.

The University of Bamberg has been an ORCID member since 2019 and supports the use of ORCID iDs, for example in the research information system or in the open access journals of the University of Bamberg Press. Within the University, the University Library is responsible for all issues related to ORCID.

Benefits

  • Unique identifier, valid indefinitely, without restriction to specialties or institutions
  • Registration and full control of all data
  • Easy identification of identical names or different spellings
  • Visibility through clear association with your own research output and activities, such as publications, research data, projects, etc.
  • With your consent (trusted parties), your ORCID profile is automatically updated with research activities from FIS and new publications from Crossref und Datacite, for example

Recommendations

The University Management encourages the University's researchers to set up an ORCID and to link their research activities to the ORCID. It recommends that the University's researchers designate the University Library as a 'Trusted Party' in their ORCID profile and authorise the Otto-Friedrich-Universit?t Bamberg to maintain the University affiliation and the assignment of research activities in the ORCID profiles.

Please do the following:

  • Create an ORCID iD.
  • If possible, enter all spellings and variants of your name (e.g. maiden name, other first names, resolved umlauts).
  • Use the standardised university name 'Otto-Friedrich-Universit?t Bamberg'.
  • In your ORCID settings, add Bamberg University Library, the DOI providers CrossRef and DataCite, and the open access search engine BASE as trusted parties (instructions). This will allow your ORCID profile to be continuously updated with new information from these sources.
  • Link your ORCID iD to your profile in the Research Information System (RIS) and adjust your ORCID settings in the RIS. Your ORCID iD will then be displayed in the RIS and the RIS data will be synchronised with your ORCID profile, either manually or automatically.
  • Always include your ORCID iD when submitting articles, publications, published research data and project proposals.
  • Also include your ORCID iD in your FIS profile, on your own website and in your email signature. This makes it easier for others to search for your publications and increases the visibility of your research.

ORCID in the Research Information System (FIS)

ORCID is integrated in the Current Research Information System (FIS) of the Otto-Friedrich-Universit?t Bamberg. After successful linking, the ORCID icon will be displayed in your profile and in the various research activities in the FIS. If you have not yet linked your ORCID iD to the FIS, the green iD icon will be missing.

FIS-ORCID link

With your link, you grant the FIS the following permissions

  • Retrieve your ORCID iD
  • Read your 'Trusted Parties' settings and their visibility
  • add/update your research activities
  • add/update information from your profile

ORCID settings in FIS

You can first select a synchronisation mode for ORCID. If you select 'Automatic', the system will send the data regularly and automatically, usually once in the evening. If you select 'Manual', you will need to manually send the entries in the queue to ORCID.

For publications, research data and projects, you can choose which publications, research data or projects (with restrictions) linked to your profile will be transferred to your ORCID profile. You can also choose which information from your FIS profile is transferred to ORCID.

ORCID-Login via via Shibboleth

If you have stored your @uni-bamberg.de email address in your ORCID account, you can login there using Shibboleth. On the ORCID login page, select 'Sign in through your institution' and 'University of Bamberg' and enter your ORCID credentials once. This is independent of whether you have linked your ORCID iD to the Research Information System (FIS).
